EURIPIDES' "CRETANS"
Theatrical adaptation of Letas Koutsochera's texts
The enigmatic work of Euripides "Cretans", seeks to compose its fragments, which come to life on stage, bound by a metaphysical Minoan ritual atmosphere. A journey through time and the maze. In Knossos, which means Knowledge.
And the vision of Daedalus to lead us back and forth in time, inside and outside the aspects and corridors of our mind and soul. The myth of Pasiphae, the position of the holy woman, the enigmatic role of the dance of the mystics, the male thrashing as a seal of the sacred union of Pasiphae-Taurus, the dance of the Moon and the Sun, the dance of life, the ritual of blessings, the Great Mother Goddess, and Icarus in a melancholy monotony before his fall.
Initiation. Release. Magic.
The lost tragedy CRETANS by Euripides, was written in 430 BC and today only fragments of it survive. With careful reconstruction and academic study, ATRAPOS Dance Culture & Group , in collaboration with the strong pen of Leta Koutsochera, attempts a ritual revival of the Minoan mysteries and one de-symbolization of the myth, with social, physical, but also metaphysical extensions. The academic study of cultural scientist Parmenidis Bousiou, the dramatic proposal of Arsinoe Lily Karadima and the poetic speech of Leta Koutsochera who enlivens and fills the enigmatic gaps in the lost parts of original Euripides fragments, attempt a complete presentation of this Euripidean tragedy.
When Minos receives a beautiful white bull from the sea, an indication from the god Poseidon that he is the mighty king of Crete, does not make the sacrifice he promised. As a punishment, Poseidon's rage creates an irresistible attraction to Minos's wife, Pasiphae, who mates with the white bull, with the help of the ingenious Daedalus, something that infuriates Minos. From this union the Minotaur is born, an alloy of man and animal. Symbols for life, time, death, the position of women in society, Knowledge, the hereafter. A different approach to tragedy, with strong references to the ritual kinesiology of the Minoan era and choreographies taken from snapshots imprinted on rare seal stones.
